2021 年 7 月、石川県内灘町にて開催された展覧会「内灘闘争~砂と風の記憶~」にて展示された音響作品。制作にあたって、5 月 から 6 月までの一ヶ月間、毎日金沢市から内灘町まで往復 1 時間かけて毎日欠かさず通い続けた。内灘町は、米軍の砲弾試射場が 誘致され、それに身を挺して徹底抗議した内灘闘争という歴史的事件を背景に持つ。また、日本海岸沿いの街ということもあって、 強風やそれに伴う砂の飛来、及び諸外国から流れ着くゴミなど、様々な環境的問題に抵抗してきた街でもある。本作品はそうした「部 外者に対する抵抗」をテーマに制作された。 内灘町にとって、隣接した市と言えど、金沢にいる私は部外者である。しかし、毎日通い続けると、内灘の空気、匂い、人の動きなど、 街の質感に身体がな滲み始め、金沢と内灘両方の生活が入り混じる。にもかかわらず、内灘の歴史や人々をリサーチすればするほ ど自分がこの街の外側にいることを突きつけられる感覚が強くなっていく。そもそも部外者とはなんだろうか。内灘町に住む人だっ て、移住してきた人だっているはずだ。どこからがか内でどこからが外か、誰が外を決めているのか、我々は何に抵抗するのか。 そういった考えから、内灘の歴史を作品化することはやめて、ひたすら海岸の漂流物を拾い集め、それを一か所に集めたり、街に 不釣りあいなほどギラついたファミレスや中華チェーン店に通い続け、安い洋風のドリアやチャーハンを食べ続けたり、海の中に 入ってひたすら襲いくる波を全身で受け止めたりと、内と外、抵抗に関する意味のない行為を繰り返し続けた。展示では、内灘海 水浴場の砂浜にスピーカーを二台設置し、これらの行為を録音した音声 30 日分が同時に鳴らされている。 また、内灘へ通うたびに日記のようなテキストを書いており、それがフラッグ(旗)として米軍試射場跡の壁や砂浜に数カ所掲示 されている。フラッグに印刷されている QR コードを読み取ることでテキストを読むことができるが、風が全く吹いてない時には 布が垂れ下がってコードを読み取れないフラッグがあったり、あるいは強風が原因で風に飛ばされ、会期序盤に読めなくなったテキストもある。
This work was exhibited at the exhibition “Uchinada Struggle – Memories of Sand and Wind” held in Uchinada Town, Ishikawa Prefecture. For a month from May to June, he commuted from Kanazawa City to Uchinada Town every day for an hour round-trip without fail. Uchinada has in its background the historical incident of the Uchinada Struggle, in which the town protested against a U.S. military artillery test range that was being built in the area. Also, being located along the coast of Japan, Uchinada has resisted various environmental problems, such as strong winds, flying sand, and garbage from other countries. This work was created on the theme of such “resistance against outsiders.
For Uchinada, I am an outsider in Kanazawa, even though it is a neighboring city. However, as I continue to commute to Uchinada every day, my body begins to blend in with the texture of the town, such as the air, smells, and movement of people, and my life in both Kanazawa and Uchinada become intermingled. Despite this, the more I research Uchinada’s history and people, the more I feel that I am on the outside of the city. What does it mean to be an outsider? There must be people who live in Uchinada, and there must also be people who have moved here. Who decides what is outside and what are we resisting? With these thoughts in mind, I decided not to create a work of art about the history of Uchinada, but instead continued to repeat meaningless acts of resistance to the inside and the outside. In the exhibition, two speakers are set up on the beach at Uchinada Beach, and 30 days of audio recordings of these acts are played simultaneously.
He also wrote a diary-like text every time he went to Uchinada, which is displayed as flags on the walls of the former U.S. Army test range and on the beach at several locations. The text can be read by scanning the QR code printed on the flags, but when there is no wind at all, the cloth hangs down and the code cannot be read, and some flags are blown away by strong winds, making the text unreadable early in the session.
